Case Study: The Process Behind the Epic Logo

We reflect back on the process undertaken to develop a new logo for an exciting, yet at the time undefined new business.

It begun with a phone call.

"Dom, have you done much logo design before?"

It was Richard on the phone, soon to be owner of EPIC Events and Marketing. He was explaining this idea behind a potential new business venture, something along the lines of event management and marketing for a range of clients.

He had the name, EPIC, and had a loose colour palette - but wasn't sure about the direction of the logo for his idea; the symbol that people could instantly identify the business with.

Case Study: The Process Behind the Epic Logo

Although obvious, the design process a logo goes through is different to a website - which is what I was used to at the time. Logos can be much more definitive - it's one item, versus a series of pages or outcomes.

EPIC's process begun with a brain storm: what's in the name? What immediately comes to mind? What does EPIC conjour? What will the business do?

After a tricky and measured process from my end, it was the later question that provided the series of 'light bulb moments' for the final outcome.

At the core of EPIC was going to be people... people coming together.

Specifically, Richard and EPIC's clients coming together to form a relationship and develop an amazing event or marketing outcome.

Through investigating the word "EPIC" itself, the 'E' and 'C' looked quite similar in their form. Flipping the 'C' provided what I think of as the magnet, that coming together of client and Richard.

Presenting this concept to Richard was a nervous phone call. However, incredibly rewarding - when after a few rounds of further iterating the idea, we came to an outcome that met what Richard had in mind. The EPIC Events and Marketing logo was produced and issued to the client!

Since delivering the logo a few years ago now, EPIC has gone on to many great achievements, including coordinating events and individuals from a local to an international level, as well as gaining exposure as a comprehensive and professional event organiser.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to deliver a unique design outcome that enhances the work that EPIC does - through some creative thinking and a great relationship with the client.
